The CHALLENGES Pond Design & construction in Fayetteville, NC..

 Ponds are Beautiful works of art that are dotted around the landscapes of Fayetteville, Hope Mills, Pinehurst, Southern Pines, NC (North Carolina). This area is known as the Sandhills, often time you will hear the weather stations refer to this section of NC as the Sandhills. The reason for this names is because we are right in the middle of to prominent geographic location the coastal plans with all the sand and beaches to the east and the Piedmont to pour west. This mix of sandy soil creates some challenges when designing and building a water feature.

The challanges that you face when building a water feature is the soil. the soil in this area is not quite sand but not you typical clay mix. This from the USDA describes the soil exactly. "Sandhill soil is a loose, gray sandy soil, commonly found in the Coastal Plain region of North Carolina". According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), ​

When a designing a pond there are certain things that you may have to be aware of...

​1. Adding shelves to your pond...
We build ponds with shelves all the time that is our SOP. in this area it is more important than ever. Shelves add stability to the ponds walls and helps reduce the the chances of the walls of the pond collapsing before you put water into the pond.

​2. Soil settling around your water feature....
Me and my designer was talking the other day. He is from Chicago and ther the soil is different. he mentioned that when you put a pipe in the ground in Chicago you can go back 10 years from now and the pipe is in the same place. here we have a great deal of settling due to the fine grans of sand that are mixed into the soil. so that when you are building a pond or any type of water feature you need to do extra compacting to ensure there is very little settling

3. Boulder size in placement
When working in very sandy soil you have to worry about the size and placement of the rocks that you are using. When placing very large boulder around 500lbs or greater take the time to compact the soil and maybe add a clay soil mix to help stabilize the soil. And you do not want a 500lb boulder shifting once the soil settles from all the construction
